As shown in their recent hosting on the World Cup, Rio de Janeiro mergers its constant carnival atmosphere with sporting traditions to host a truly magnificent event. The locals open up their hearts to welcoming fans from all over the world to one of the greatest events in the sporting calendar. The Olympics will see the very best athletes from across the globe compete and be celebrated for their greatness in a truly unique atmosphere that must be experienced.
Jubilee Year of Mercy – Rome – Italy
2016 is set to be a grand year for Rome with the official Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pilgrims are expected to descend on the city with Pope Francis allowing the doors of papal basilicas, usually sealed to the public, to be opened. Called the ‘Extraordinary Jubilee’, it is expected to be larger than the last, when 25 million people visited. This is an amazing event to experience regardless of your religious beliefs.
The Setouchi Art Festival – Japan
The islands of the Setouchi play host to this innovative arts festive every three years bringing artists, architects and designers together. Over spring, summer and autumn expect contemporary and traditional installations on the ‘Art Island’ of Naoshima, so named because of all the galleries there. The nearby Teshima Art Museum, on the island of Teshima is a collaboration between the artist Rei Naito and the architect Ryue Nishizawa and could be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
World Design Capital – Taipei – Taiwan
Awarded biennially to cities based on their commitment to use design as an effective tool for economic, social and cultural development, Taipei will be celebrating 2016 as the World Design Capital. There are a number of activities in formal venues, coffee shops, train stations and even street corners all branded together under the theme ‘Adaptive City – Design in Motion’ which will turn Taipei into an inspiring design haven.
UEFA European Championships – France
France will play host to the European Championships with the best 24 countries in Europe gathering for the first tournament in the new extended format. Fan zones will be set up throughout the country so if you can’t get a ticket for a game you can still partake in the festive atmosphere that will be created throughout the tournament.
Glow – Santa Monica – California – USA
In September , the golden sands of California’s Santa Monica Beach will play host to the triennial Glow festival, the first all-night free arts event in the United States to emphasise the commissioning of new work. Expect light projections, and interactive are installations as well as music performances along the beach, at Palisades Park and on the pier. There are also 120 museums, art galleries, public art displays to discover in the area.
Easter Rising – Dublin – Ireland
2016 marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, one of the defining moments of the struggle for Irish independence. The rising saw days of fighting on the streets of Dublin with hundreds of casualties. Those who lost their lives will be honoured with commemorations in Dublin including a wreath laying at Dublin Castle on Easter Sunday, and a ceremony in the Garden of Remembrance. There will be a street parade and the Easter Riding Centenary Visitor Facility will be opened at the General Post Office.
