Callanish Stones, Isle of Lewis
The Callanish Stones, on the Isle of Lewis, is an extraordinary monument that is centred on a circle of tall stones. These stones were erected 4,000-5,000 years ago. The site is open 7 days a week, all year round, and there is no admission charge to access the site. These stones are one of the most complete circles of stones in Europe. This site is often referred to as the “Stonehenge of Scotland”. You can find this site near the village of Calanais, it is one of the most remote stone circles in the British isles.
Edinburgh Castle
Sitting on a rock, Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline of Scotland’s capital city, and as a result, provides you with loads of opportunity for some photos. The castle is the most visited paid tourist attraction in Scotland and in 2013 the attraction saw over 1.4 million visitors. It is also Edinburgh’s most frequently visited tourist attraction; more than 70% of leisure visitors to Edinburgh visited the castle.
Ben Nevis, Highlands
Ben Nevis, located in the Highlands, is the tallest mountain in Great Britain, and is situated at the Western end of the Grampian Mountains. Located near the town of Fort William, this stunning mountain attracts an estimated 125,000 climbers every year plus a further 100,000. This mountain’s summit stands at 1,344 metres above sea level and as a result gives a stunning view. There are also the ruins of a building on this mountain, which was an observatory, permanently staffed from 1883, until its closure in 1904.
Luskentyre Beach, Isle of Harris
If you look at a picture of Luskentyre Beach, you could be forgiven for thinking it is in the Caribbean, but it is actually located on west coast of the Isle of Harris. It is said to be one of the top ten beaches in the world and was named as the number one beach in Europe. Luskentyre is famous for the white sandy beach which runs for miles, plus the beautiful green-blue waters lapping onto its shores. This is a must visit location as you will get some stunning photography from here.
Stac Pollaidh, Highlands
One of the finest small mountains in Scotland, Stac Pollaidh gives stunning, panoramic views in all directions and even boasts a wonderfully complex summit. It is situated at 612 metres, and a relatively fit person could climb it in less than 3 hours. While it can be difficult to climb this beautiful mountain, the views that can be seen from the top are well worth it, including the Atlantic Ocean. The climb up to the ridge is steep and to reach the summit, a high level of scrambling expertise would be needed.
